This photo shows one of the last White Deerskin Dances held in Panamnik in 1912, halting for over 50 years. World Renewal practices have since rebegun in a neighboring village site by living Relatives of past ceremonial leaders and dancers.Cultural Narrative:
This photo was taken between 1910 and 1920 in the village of Panamnik, which is now known as Orleans, CA. This photo was likely taken the last time the dance was held in the early 1900s, as it was stopped by medicine person and ceremonial leader, Sandy Bar Tom, in 1912 due to disrespect and ridicule from people in the audience (Mary Ike, cited by Palmer's 1980 Karok World Renewal and Village Sites: A Cultural and Historical District). This photo being taken by a non-Native person likely meant there were other non-Native people in attendance in the audience at the dance.
